Update on the Medication Optimization Diffusion Grants Program

4/30/10 By David Lindeman

I am happy to report that the five grantees for the Medication Optimization Diffusion Grants Program have successfully gone into the field and are already providing significant insight as to what contributes to successful diffusion strategies for enabling technologies. Each of the programs is in the process of creating training tools, checklists, and other products that are being used in support of program expansion. As these tools become available for general use they will be posted on the Center’s website. The final instruments and products developed by grantees will be organized as a Medication Optimization Toolkit by early 2011.

Recent research continues to validate the importance of technologies contributing to the improvement of medication adherence, medication reconciliation, and medication monitoring . A recent Health Affairs article suggests that the greatest return on investment in health information technologies will be derived from reducing adverse drug reactions. The authors concluded that two thirds of the returns on the Veterans Health Administration’s $7 billion investment in HIT was attributable to reducing adverse drug reactions and the attendant costs of treating them. Economics aside, it is very encouraging to see how HIT and enabling technologies can help older adults lead healthier lives and avoid complications from their all-too-prevalent chronic health conditions.

We are looking forward to learning more from our programs and sharing successful diffusion strategies around medication optimization.
